The catalogue comes from two places with nothing in common: a compulsory public register, and the websites of private foundations, one by one.
The public side: the Base de Datos Nacional de Subvenciones
Every call for applications (convocatoria) run by a Spanish public body has to be published by law in the Base de Datos Nacional de Subvenciones, the BDNS. That is where the bulk of the catalogue comes from. Not all of it gets in: we import what is open to legal persons with no economic activity and is awarded through competitive calls (concurrencia competitiva). Funding for companies, for town councils and for individuals stays out, and so do the agreements that come out with the beneficiary already named, because a Third Sector organisation cannot apply for them.
The private side: the foundations
On the private side there is no compulsory register to search. The list of foundations that really do run calls is built by hand and checked one by one: a foundation goes in once we have found the page on its own website where it publishes them. It is a small part of the catalogue: the vast majority is public money.
How often it is updated
We sweep the BDNS every night, in two passes: one looks for new calls from the last seven days, the other asks again for the record of everything still live, to see whether a date, an amount or a document has moved. On Sundays we go ninety days back, because the BDNS sometimes publishes with an earlier date. Once a day and no more: it dates what it publishes by day, with no time attached, so looking twenty-four times returns the same as looking once.
The official call is always what counts. Every record links to the bases reguladoras (the binding rules of the call), to the sede electrónica (the government's online filing portal) and to the BDNS record: before you submit anything, check it there.
